The return of Krimu and Sevastopol to Russia was a lot more of a near thing than many people think. I remember very well the day, if memory serves it was the day of the ‘Tatar’, read right sector and mejlis, riot at Krim Rada in Simferopol, that the Russian Black Sea Flot commander stated when asked by a news type that his preekasse was to defend the Flot, not Sevastopol or the citizens.
That statement was like a bucket of ice cold water thrown in our faces and more than a few of the ‘new patriots’ of Sevastopol were given pause but most simply understood how serious the situation was, doubled down and got to work.
Right sector operatives had been coming down to Krimu and Sevastopol starting in mid January, one could spot them a kilometer away with ease. However, they were here and did start to subtly intimidate some of the citizens. On the other hand most were quietly noted and their little nests, usually in private lodgings in dachi areas, were located and listed. They were interesting to watch, three or four young men with a few young women, lounging around during the day on street and park benches during the time when everyone else was working. They would also nose around to every back alley and side street and photo everything while trying to pass themselves off as ‘tourists’. In January and February? Nice try but no cigar.
The were two major turning points in the events leading up to the success of the Third Defense of Sevastopol during that fateful week after the coup in Kiev.
One, our Berkut and Militsiya units that were in Kiev during the Maidan coup d’etat had literally fought their way back to Krimu and Sevastopol after their betrayal by Yanukovich and his stalwart allies. Their welcome in Naxhimova Square in City Center was a flower strewn tumult and from the hearts of Sevastopol Citizens, so much so that some of our Berkut and Militsiya were reduced to tears. Berkut then moved to their lager in City where a cordon of citizens was set up to protect them from SBU as armed Berkut guarded from inside. As an aside Ukraine SBU were faced down more than once as they attempted their usual foolishness. After the first face down the word spread like wildfire through the citizenry that they were nothing but a paper tiger, a semi armed criminal gang that were nothing. That was the end of SBU down here.
The citizens of Sevastopol and Krimea began to set up road block posts at the Krim-Ukraine borders and around Sevastopol, Simferopol and Yalta. They were armed with clubs and one or two ancient hunting weapons. In mid week Berkut, after negotiations with Sevastopol locals, declared for Sevastopol, armed up and headed for the barricades to assist and stiffen them. The thugs in Kiev were, to put it mildly, furious.
The second watershed event was thus. After the riot at Krim Rada in Simferopol where right sector, clearly identifiable in the overhead videos, were defeated, as they withdrew they expressed their extreme displeasure at the turn of events and swore they would be back to burn Rada to the ground and show the locals ‘who was boss down here’.
Not much more than 24 hours later a small convoy of aging civilian vehicles appeared at the Krimea Rada Complex in Simferopol, well before dawn. The vehicles disgorged a fairly large group of well armed men who calmly tossed a flash bang through the door of Rada Building and stormed in, much to the shock of the Militsiya Guard Detail stationed there who were expecting a different group to arrive around dawn, politely but firmly removed the pistols and cell phones from Militsiya and invited them to leave. The cell phones were returned to the Militsiya worthies as they left, the pistols stayed in Rada building with the men.
These two events, Berkut pledging allegiance to Sevastopol and moving to the barricades and the taking of Krim Rada by the citizens, were the two salient events that led to the success of the Russian Spring in this peninsula. Unarmed citizens had already begun to block all major and minor bases of the Ukraine Armed Forces, demonstrations and marches were held all over Krim and Sevastopol and Militsiya, DAI and SBU were relegated to bit players in the events who were made well aware of the consequences to themselves if one citizen was harmed by them.
I have no doubts that Moscow was watching these events keenly and it was these two salient events plus the spontaneous blockading of the peninsula, major cities and the Ukraine Armed Forces that in my opinion was the catalyst for Moscow to move and come to the assistance of Krimea and Sevastopol.

Thanx for that Auslander!
All that said and time past, still can not believe that is behind us without bloodshed…
Bet washington-aviv is in the same shoes…:-)
It wasn’t quite bloodless not counting a few bloody noses and black eyes in the early days. At the Krim Rada riot five died, all locals defending the Rada building, and more than two score defenders needed hospital level treatment for wounds and injuries. Two, one Opolchensya and one Ukraine Major who ran a weather depot in Simferopol, were killed in March by a 19 year old sniper from Lemberg. One of our boys was killed stopping a Ukraine army truck on a back road near the west border crossing, he blocked the truck with his old Lada and died in the collision.
Considering the risks involved in the revolution in Krim and Sevastopol the casualties were light. That statement in no way denigrates those who died in the troubles. A term I loath is something akin to ‘only two died last night’. I guess to most that term is a bit innocuous….unless you happen to be one of the two.
All things considered, this peninsula and Sevastopol came out rather well from the events.

Yup
Methinx this piece NOT about the Crimea, but all the world.
Let’s not get there, cos then it is too late.
You can reason a whole lot of shite out, given time and patience – but you have listen to all the gripes. I mean ALL of them…even if by white working age males…if you get my meaning…
If you don’t, you will…
A tongue-in-cheek–but highly cautionary–alternate history of what would have happened if Crimea had not reunited with Russia:
May 2016:
A coalition of pro-democracy rebels led by Ukrainian Maidan activists, pro-Western Russian liberals, Pussy Riot, EuroVision contest winner Jamala, and America’s moderate Islamicist head-choppers from Syria seize control of Moscow and the Kremlin.
They call for the immediate dismantling of Russia’s entire nuclear arsenal and the mandatory imposition of transgender-friendly bathrooms throughout the Russian Federation.
Barack Obama appoints Vicky Nuland as America’s provisional colonial viceroy for Russia.
The Nobel Peace Prize Committee awards its “prestigous” honor to Nadezhda Savchenko of Ukraine, who immediately calls for an American nuclear attack against Russia.
Actually, anon, I’d like to point out, that we DO live in that kind of an alternative reality.
What you describe is not tongue in cheek at all, it IS the world that I live in. Every friggin day there are numerous reminders to adhere to my programming.
1984 is here. And It is insane.
No, this video presentation is not fiction.
This is what already has happened.
In Odessa. Slavyansk. Mariupol. Gorlovka. Everywhere.
While Yeltsin’s personal appointee shakes hands with his “partners” from Kiev. Ships them coal. Gas. Oil. Trades. Makes grand deals with them. Writing off whatever is left of Novorossya if the “price” (nothing) is right. Ships back the convicted Nazi sadistic homosexual murderer and orthodox priest torturer to sweeten the arrangement. Has an army of apologists to whitewash what he is doing.
And the number of victims in Novorossya, already over 30,000, keeps growing by the day.
No, Syria won’t make anyone forget Novorossya.
Новороссия Novorossia,
“Has an army of apologists to whitewash what he is doing.”
I can sense your frustration and hatred towards President Putin.
I have some news for you: Putin is always right.
In the battle for Syria, Russia saves everything and everyone: the Middle East, Iran, Asia, China, Africa, itself, Ukraine and Europe. It’s a battle of Biblical proportion.
Who was the first talking about “Novorossia”? Girkin and Co.
Who is Strelkov-Girkin?
As I wrote in “Michael McFaul: We declared war on Russia. What’s next?”
http://thesaker.is/michael-mcfaul-we-declared-war-on-russia-what-next-by-scott/
In brief, the US and NATO operation in Ukraine was designed like a computer game. They created two groups of armed men: first group was “pro-Maidan,” the second group was “anti-Maidan.” Both groups called for volunteers. First and second groups pretended to fight with each other, however their victims were volunteers, civilians, law enforcement officers, and regular Ukrainian army conscripts. Members of the first and second groups often were switching affiliations, being “pro-Maidan” then becoming suddenly “anti-Maidan: and vice versa. This fake war, with very real victims, was daily recorded on videos by professional crews of journalists and video engineers using professional equipment. Videos made of this war were broadly televised.
That’s who have started to use historical term “Novorossia” first. Take a look at so called “Novorossia” and “Anti-Maidan” web sites. Most of them, if not all, are based in private IT companies located in the UK and Germany.
As for all the killed and mutilated in Ukraine… it’s a war crimes committed by the US, NATO, Kiev, Tel-Aviv and Brussels. There will be the Yalta-2 and the second Nuremberg.
Ukrainians are now doing a great job by purging the country from Nazis, and federalizing, to strip pro-Washington Kiev of any power.
Savchenko just called for the end of hostilities in Donbass She is truly a “Putin’s agent.”
Watch this video 2016.06.08 UKR court in Kiev. Zaverukha, a convicted Nazi sadistic murderer, with other Nazis killed about 400 people in Odessa on May2nd 2014. She was filmed, making Molotov cocktails. Soon after, she and several other neo-Nazis attacked and killed a policeman on duty.
On July 8, 2016 During the court hearing a group of Ukrainian nationalists tried to break in and “save” her from law enforcement. As you can see, Berkut officers almost ripped her head off in a process.
ZAVERUKHA`s hair extracted from the chamber of the court

there are three ways to define truth:
1. Truth is that which corresponds to reality.
2. Truth is that which matches its object.
3. Truth is simply telling it like it is.
The truth is not defined by the messenger.

For what then nukes?
For what then all the referenda and treaties which the West breached on wich Russia could count if it only wanted to???

Coal, Oil, goods.
Set free a maniac murderer war criminal who only 2 months before her release got judged to stay 22 years behind bars.
The RF is not even capable of making M2 happen from Kiev’s side, people are still dying in Donetsk.
Continue this list by yourself, it would be too long.
I’m tired of this insanity from RF’s side.
Watch the victims again, watch them!!!!!!!!!!. And remember: The question on RT is wrong. The correct one would be different: What if Russia united with DonBass (entire Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts)?
Or at least: What if Russia had told DonBass the truth, no protection Syrian style.
It is all ridiculous. Of course did Russia have every right to protect its citizens. And Yanukovich should have been continued to be regarded the real president of Ukraine, which he still is.
Because the Mai 2014 Kiev elections were undemocratic like nothing (opposition completely excluded from participation).
Also this Poroshenko asshole breached every single of his promises he ever made tio Russia _and_ to the Ukrainian citizens, namely peaceful settlement with the East.
Also he is unconstituitional because he still didn’t sell his biz.
But no, Russia has noooooooo other choice than letting them die there.
Forget ventorg, that’s useless if Putin and Lavrov make a cease fire every time DonBass (or Syria) were winning.
Martin, enough is enough. We have women and sometimes teen aged school children reading this blog and there is not excuse what so ever for posting a link like you did with such images without putting a graphic warning on it at the very least.
I am amazed that the moderators have let some posts through the process that are simply long streams with news links that have absolutely no connection to the original posted article or informations. That form of posting is a well known trolling tactic and as such is intended, and has done so here, to drive people away from a blog or sight.
This is the Saker Blog. Many of us here are well aware of what is going on in the world, by whom and why. A goodly amount of informations posted here are interesting and sometimes have informations that at least I do not know of. On the other hand none of us that I know of agree with any politician 100% and that includes Mr. Putin. However we have what we have and it is fully within your rights to hate Mr. Putin, Mrs. Merkel, Mr. Golland or any other politician in the world with every cell in your brain. If you feel so strongly about anyone or anything why not open your own blog to express your thoughts? If you simply have an agenda, and I am not saying you do, then please take your agenda somewhere else and leave the intelligent discourse and information exchange to others.
As for the civil war in Ukraine, if you feel so strongly about it why don’t you go to Novorossiya and help? It is easy to get there and anyone and everyone can serve and at least do something. Not everyone has the ability or the training to stand in the line and exchange musketry with the enemy. Those who serve in the rear echelons are just as important as those brave men fighting at the tip of the spear and without the rear echelons passing forward the bullets and beans the fighters are reduced to using clubs against a well armed enemy.

Auslander, warning tags are a pest that emerged from political correctness and safe spaces. If this blog would turn into a safe space (for whomever), reality, truth and honest discussion will die.
Martin, cancelling diplomatic relations spells strong protest but should come late. Cancelling trade and financial relations should come well before. You advocate both and I agree to some extent, but only to some. You seem to ignore that Russia’s trade relations with western Europe make Europeans think twice before going to war against Russia. I don’t know what is the right balance in this crisis. However, I think gas contracts with Ukraine won’t be renewed. If Ukraine keeps stealing gas the current contracts may be cancelled. This point of no return is coming soon, I guess.
Marcel,
> cancelling diplomatic relations spells strong protest but should come late
When?
Before the fall of Moscow or afterwards?
Before Moscow, St.Petersburg and Stalingrad have been nuked or afterwards?
Before all of the RF territories have been occupied by US/EU/ZATO or afterwards?
The countries that I mentioned were actively and directly involved in Maidan and clearly violated the 2014.02.21st agreement before the ink was dry, in the 1:1 literal sense.
Same with M1. Same with M2. Same with OSCE being blind.
They never ever in their media reported about the satanic diabolic nightmares committed by Kiev-Ukraine, while they banned them months long from their media until they finally showed some footage like this but completely turned upside down who is the aggressor versus who are the victims.
Then the entire west congratulates if someTHING like Savchenko gets released from her 100% justified jail term for no reason at a way too small exchange deal.
If that’s not enough, what is?
At a time when the current Kremlin administration still had all the cards on their side they failed to react and only took Crimea (Why? Because of its strategic importance, which DonBass sadly doesn’t have.) What can we expect now that all the cards were either wasted, not used, left for expiration? The situation is getting more and more dangerous. And all I can read by analysts is “He is always right”.
No, not even Stalin or Lenin were always right.
And if some say there is a God who is “always right” then I wonder why thos “God” lets such terrible losses happen as shown in the pictures.
Ahhh, alllllright, he loves us sooo much he wants to “test” us.
Well, good analysis perhaps.
Martin, I understand your frustration. I never wrote that Putin is always right and am not of that opinion. However, I read the sentence as an ironic joke borrowed from German soccer rules, whose first and last “rules” are “Germany wins.” We all know how that plays out in reality. :-)
The last moment to break diplomatic ties would be in the evening before war or upon strong indications of an imminent attack. Ending diplomacy during peace times (relatively speaking) involves a number of issues, in particular regarding visa and cross-border travels. It could lead to numerous visitors / tourists / workers staying trapped in their current locations.
I know that all treaties and promises were broken by western governments and the gang in charge of Ukraine. Also, I did not welcome Savchenko’s release, but accept Russia’s decision to do so.
My speculation is that Russia pushes western MSM into overdrive to overload public opinion to the point that people just cannot stand it anymore. Very much as it happened in the Soviet union, where everyone was aware of the propaganda being served by the media. Given the limited reach of Russian viewpoints in the western public, it might be a viable alternative to active counter-measures.
Regarding Ukraine, I think that Russia does not want to be involved more than necessary. Looking at the tendency of blaming Russia for everything that goes wrong, I see it as a cure based on saying “Eat your own plate, live in the self-arranged mess and clean it up yourselves!” After all, Ukraine is (was) independent and shall be adult enough to care about its own living room.
Hi, so far I can agree with what you wrote.
But the reaction to the Maidan events was simply completely unprofessional. Russia did know what was in the pipeline for at least half a year in advance.
You recall that Maidan was then even predicted in the public by the Kiev Rada’s last real communist in November 2013, with all the precise details.
Russia’s FSB must have been aware of these plans for years.
But of course – winter Olympics are a million times more important, are they?
So Russia “was completely ohhh, surprised”.
“””””My speculation is that Russia pushes western MSM into overdrive to overload public opinion to the point that people just cannot stand it anymore. Very much as it happened in the Soviet union, where everyone was aware of the propaganda being served by the media.”””””
The irony is, that people in the East did indeed have this feeling, but later it turned out (to everybody who isn’t an Oligarch himself or otherwise isn’t blind) that all the “communist propaganda lies” had in reality really been the truth, but when folks started to figure this out it was too late and everything has been lost, given away, abandoned and ridiculed already.
Now however the Western public is in turn also noticing this! Even in many of those parts which never had been part of the Soviet Bloc. So unlike to what you said not more people are linke in the late 1980ties, but more people are like in the late 1990ties when they grasp that Communism __was__ in fact __correct__.
Recently I posted a link from Z-“german” MSM where (in all seriousness) Merkel whines about, that 60% of the germans don’t trust the Z-german MSM anymore. She said that this really “disappoints” and “puzzles” her, because “Germany has sooooo many honest hard-working journalists doing a great job in researching their subjects well”.
I think it was an article in http://www.welt.de (eveil Z-german garbage, but one of the most established papers in .de)
I trust your judgement of the Soviet media, Martin. I probably have a very incomplete picture as our media showed, most likely, just the most blatant propagandist posters and articles.
The Russian government was likely aware of the brewing coup in Kiev, but it could have misjudged the timing as it was in the making for years. Moreover, Russia counted on the former Ukrainian government. I read that the Kremlin finally advised Yanukovich to dissolve the violent protests shortly before the killers overturned everything, but Yanukovich decided not to impose law and order by force. Failed badly but wisdom is collected in hindsight.
I got disgusted by German media in 2008 already. At the time I regularly bought “Die Zeit” but could never stand its NATO stance and propaganda. Less than a year into weekly adrenaline rushes due to utterly dismal opinion pieces, I stopped spending money on it. Not much later, I had to stop buying the NZZ for the same reason. It is unfortunate because there are honest articles by respectful journalists and editors in nearly every journal, whom I would like to reward by decent salaries. However, paying for propaganda outlets equals financing (state) terrorism – an outright criminal activity I am not willing to support.

There is such a thing as ‘culture’. Women and children do not need to see such graphic photos hence my call to at least announce that they are graphic. On the very rare occasion I have posted graphic vids I made it very clear that they were not for women and children. I respectfully request that everyone else do the same.

Martin, I have stated that both of you should now end this conversation as it is personal and not constructive any longer. This particular conversation is closed. Thank you. Mod
Dear Auslander,
I understand your point regarding children but I disagree regarding women. Exactly because these photos show the brutality, they should not be avoided. War cannot happen if the so-called home front refuses. Good reason to make all adults aware of the mayhem it causes. To me it was clear from the context that the photos would be very explicit.
By the way, marking images as “graphic” (the very definition of an image/photo) instead of “brutal” or “explicit” is just the icing on the cake – politically correct to avoid even the smallest emotional footprint. I know, I know, everyone else writes it too, but I cannot help shaking my head. In particular in light of youngsters playing first person shooters all night long.
Anyway. Sorry for my rambling.
@Auslander:
“””””As for the civil war in Ukraine, if you feel so strongly about it why don’t you go to Novorossiya and help? It is easy to get there and anyone and everyone can serve and at least do something. “””””
The only reason why I am still in Germany is because I see it as my duty to care for my elderly relatives here.
Also: It is not true that it is “easy to get there” if you have only 10’s of thousands of debts and at the moment 2 or 3 (I must check) Cents in cash.
Furthermore: Where did I say that I feel strongly about war? No, I’m not such a weapons collector freak who dreams of killing others and news from memory all the very latest details about the latest killing machine models. Even when defending myself it would be a horror for me.
I am ready to do it at a point where it is for a good goal (such as staying alive, protecting Russians or even the high dream goal of a communist revolution !) and where it makes sense in the first place (e.g. where the victories won’t get stolen by a worthless signature at some desk hundreds of kilometers away).
Otherwise what I wrote was very different, I listed the options which Russia had to _____avoid_____ the deaths of these very girls, childs, women, civilians that I linked to.
This way (Novorussiya) or that way (not such bigmouthed empty promises from Moscow in April 2014). But Moscow *did* have an entire palette of options on the table.
All the negative AntiRussian effects that were feared for too much action in DonBass happened anyway (Sanctions, NATO-buildup, something like MH17, all the western lies, hatred and propaganda).
So what was the point in letting these civilians die for nothing?
That was my question.
Russia behaves like the weakest in class, although it is the largest country in the world and one of the 3 superpowers in the world.

@ Martin from Soviet East Berlin
Unfortunately, what Новороссия said above is 100% true.
And to your observation Martin,
Forget ventorg, that’s useless if Putin and Lavrov make a cease fire every time DonBass (or Syria) were winning.
I can say: Amen.
The whole post get nylligied when write bs propaganda like:
“Putin is always right”.
There is not 1 person on this planet that is always right.
And only future history can give clue if a decision was right.
And even then one would not definitly know what alternative outcome would result in. (Need to observe parallell universes. Or use timemachine for “do overs” to know that).
And i dont necesary agree with that Putin did everything right.
But he did what had least inediate risks (easiest to see the future).
The west dont understand Russia way of thinking.
Russia doesnt understand the west way of thinking.
The west sees Russias insbility to react (not giving emotional tempers) as a sign of guilt and weakness.
The west humor is also alot more cheaper/in your face. Russian humor is diffrent.
Etc
Two diffrent worlds in many ways.
And by not sticking up for yourself, then the west (bullies) will increase the risk/whats at stake.
Untill they one day overstep themselves into a new WW3. (Thats how western bullies work. They just repeat and up the antes).
Ukraine, there were a whole lot Russia could and should have done there. Even within alot of legal framework (Yanukowich was alive, so they had even the right to go in with approval from him. Or even according to the nuclear dearment agreement which demanded russia to protect ukraina from foreign hostilities. Etc).
The more time russia hesitated, the more it escelated, and the window of oppurtunity dissapeared.
The only unknown factor was that one dont know if Russia would have had to be in ukraine for to long, and that cost. And what to do with west-ukraine (lviv, which is the capitol of the neo-nazi rightsector. Who btw is not ethnic ukranians, they are mostly ethnic lithuania-polish. But who at same time massacred over border into poland during world war. They are Basicly very conflicted who nooone really wants.
But best would be to give them their own west-ukranian country. They are cancer.
The sanctions?
Irony is that the west knows its illegal and bs.
But as long as russians was “stupid” enough to let this coup in kiev pass by, the usa had all the false ammo they needed to pressure many layers of sanctions on russia.
And they could increase layer on layets. Perfect recipie.
Instread if russia went into ukraine to clean up. Defacto telling usa/the west to f off (that such proxy wars was not accepted on russian border), the west would not had chance to implement anywhere near so much sanctions on russia.
So no i doubt Putin made the right choice there. But they got severly caught offguard.
Syria however was right move. And that shocked usa/west.
So much that usa had to go from funding isis to funfing kurds instead. Their goal of breaking ip syria is still in play. To be able to get oil/gass from syria and get pipelines through.
And russia have done ALOT of right things in last 10-20 years.
Cleaning up mess from Yeltsin and usa in russia.
And getting russia in controll of itseøf by having a surpluss economic foreign treassury. A surpluss export vs import.
The last two things was vital when usa (with saudi) tried to attack russia in 2014. They used same wespon as they did against ussr.
They deliberatly crashed the oilmarkrt prices.
But one diffrences dince ussr. Russia this round had surpluss/netto export and a positive foreign balance. = they cpuld devaluate own rubbel!.
And that is a very strong selfdefenceweapon!!!.
So they devaluated own currency, so they earned just as much on the important oilexport.
Ofc they pretend that “weak” rubbel is a problem. But thry did it deliberatly to protect russia from agressive hostile enemies.
What has hurt russia however is:
– hard to get international funding for biz. (Most banks are western, and they print alot of fiat currency, which thry can take low % rent on. While eastern countries dont print like crazy, but take hogh % rent = harder for biz to operate:/
– temporary high inflation due to sudden sanctions (including food scarce, that needs to find good alternatives). This is a temporary problem, whoch is beneficislly to russia in the long run.
Checking out rus foreign policy historical assessment by Lavrov back in March, and then a summation which ended with the phrase ” we are counting on constructive and adequate response from our partner”……..all I see is is continued vacilation and deception by usa manipulating eu and nato and anyone who thigks they can join in to undermine, confront, take any advantage of rus in any way, despite the said foreign policy stating its belief there are many peoples and politicians and countries believing in the multipolar world which can only be achieved by diplomacy and economic intergration based on principles of international law.
Kerrys relationship with Lavrov I feel is only just a sop to keep up the pretence of thinks that diplomacy is working whilst usa does retything to take away or denigrate rus success eg in Syria.
As to trying to protect or look after russian peoples and russian culture which has also been publicly presented as of great importance……maybe only when anyone with rus passports or rus lineage that can be proven could be accepted by rus as refugees moving en masse to rus when finally ukr does completely fall into ruin that cannot be saved.
And when I believe at some time the UNSC and even UN itself is proven to be corrupted or corruptible beyond salvation or heading that way what would rus and friends do in the face of usa and their partners clear intent to dominate it for their own purposes……there have been odd statements about reforms or adjustments to its makeup especially unsc but that could go on forever.
I suppose that I am responding to Martins extremely serious concerns and wondering myself as to “when or what ” could become a turning point for rus to say enough is enough, although the foreign policy seems to say that there will never be a turning away point(except nuclear attack)……….
