Can one call this news ‘just delicious’? Take that Empire! Take it on the nose!
There goes the Monroe doctrine and all its subsequent child doctrines. You wanna play in my park, well, then I can play in yours. Delicious is the only word that fits! I’m sure there are a few in Washington whose faces just turned the color puce.

Two sovereign nations doing what nations do.

Now, the US Navy has to deal with a symbolic Russian naval force presence in Venezuelan port.
Recall how the USSR parked ships in Haiphong Harbor during the war in ‘Nam.

This formalizes the diplomatic relationship and economic relationship, and the military “weapons service and maintenance” relationship that already exists.

Intel, EW, missile defense training, and now maritime cohesion all signal Russia is there, holding its stakes, a friend and mentor against the Hegemon.

Exactly. “It’s what sovereign nations do”. There is no hierarchical relationship. It is based on reciprocity. I.e. Venezuelen ships can also visit Rissia .

What was good here was that both Defense Ministers could sit across from each other and know that they spoke for their armed forces, and the people and polity behind them. This has been demonstrated clearly by Venezuela, and was already known of Russia.

So, they are equals. What proceeds from this is technically unclear to me, but I’m sure others have a good material grasp of what can follow. I know that, militarily, Russia doesn’t want to deploy far from home – but when one is among friends, no matter how far around the globe, surely this is not so far?

It was a lovely one minute to watch.
