Evidence shows that Russia’s special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine is a legally justified, critically necessary, and predictable response to the US’ recent escalation of its decades-long aggression against Russia in Ukraine–militarily, in the international corporate media, in cyberspace, and in the political-economic arena. The US’ hostile actions against Russia were summarized in a 2019 US-Army funded RAND Corporation blueprint for “Over Extending and Unbalancing Russia.” Underlying US actions is its aim is to dismember and asset-strip Russia–to appropriate its coveted oil, gas, and mineral resources and vast agricultural lands–and to enable US investors’ access to Russia’s economy. This is a step towards the US’ overarching goals of controlling Central Asia and achieving full spectrum dominance or global hegemony. Although the US war against Russia in Ukraine started years ago, US aggression escalated under the Biden administration and created conditions that posed an immediate existential threat to Russia and necessitated its military response.
In 2014, the US initiated a proxy war against Russia by engineering the violent overthrow of Ukraine’s democratically-elected president. This ignited a bloody civil war on Russia’s border in which the US-installed and US-armed Kiev regime attacked the eastern provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk whose largely ethnically Russian residents opposed the US coup. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) documented the Kiev regime’s attacks that killed thousands of civilians and terrorized the populace. In 2015, the US-installed then-president, Petro Poroshenko, publicly articulated Kiev’s anti-Russia stance and its policy for the Donbass:
“We will have jobs—they will not. We will have pensions—they will not. [….] Our children will go to schools and kindergartens—theirs will hide in the basements.” Popular Ukraine pundits openly called for Donbas residents’ extermination. In 2015, Congress lifted its ban on funding Ukraine’s neo Nazi militias and placed US military trainers on the ground inside Ukraine. NATO and the CIA also began training Ukraine regime forces–effectively establishing Ukraine as a de facto US/NATO mercenary state. During the past eight years, Russia exhibited enormous restraint as the US and Ukraine violated the Minsk Protocols and rejected requests for diplomacy. In 2021, US aggression against Russia increased dramatically once Biden took office–in Ukraine and in the Black Sea. US actions and Ukraine President Zelensky’s public statements generated immediate threats to the survival of the Russian nation-state.
Russia’s Military Response Was Over-Determined By Four Existential Threats
The US government and the corporate media falsely characterize Russia’s special operation as entirely ‘unprovoked’ and an ‘illegal invasion’. These allegations ignore four conditions which each independently compelled President Putin and the Duma to initiate Russia’s denazification and demilitarization operation and which establish this intervention as consistent with international legal norms.
Chief among the factors necessitating Russia’s immediate military response were indications of an imminent new massacre as 125,000 Ukraine forces amassed along the border of Donbass in December of 2021. This was never reported in the US corporate press. Instead, the US government and corporate media repeatedly stated that Russian troops were gathering on Ukraine’s border (inside Russia) and predicted an impending Russian invasion. In hindsight, US intelligence could make this accurate claim because it was aware of the menacing buildup of Ukraine forces. Anticipating an imminent massacre, Russia was obligated to intervene militarily because it had a Responsibility to Protect (R2P) the citizens of Donbass. R2P is a political commitment to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity; it was endorsed by the United Nations at its 2005 world summit.
Second, on February 19, 2022, Ukraine President Zelensky announced that Ukraine would seek to acquire nuclear weapons, saying, “I want to believe that the North Atlantic Treaty and Article 5 will be more effective than the Budapest Memorandum.” Zelensky’s expressed desire to acquire nuclear weapons represented a dangerous threat to Moscow and signaled that the window of opportunity for conventional military intervention was closing. It is unlikely that Zelensky operates completely autonomously; Biden publicly bragged about his control over Ukraine government policies and has remunerated Zelensky following Zelensky’s implementation of anti-Russia policies and actions.
Third, Zelensky’s repudiation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances was a reminder of Ukraine’s intent to join NATO. For years, US President Biden advocated NATO membership for Ukraine, assuring Zelensky as recently as December 11, 2021 that this was in Ukraine’s own hands. NATO membership would entail NATO nuclear missiles inside Ukraine, aimed at Moscow. Ukraine’s geographic proximity to Russia eliminates the crucial minutes in which Moscow could verify and respond to an attack and would effectively place Russia and the US at DEFCON Level Two. The US dismissed Russia’s December 17, 2021 verbal and written requests for a diplomatic response to its security concerns. Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken deliberately rejected Russia’s entreaties and ignored the predictable consequences of Ukraine’s potential NATO membership. Renowned international relations scholars, diplomats and politicians, including John Mearsheimer, Jack Matlock, George Kennan, Henry Kissinger, and William Perry warned that NATO membership for Ukraine was a dangerous provocation which would trigger Russia’s military response.
A fourth threat requiring Russia’s intervention was the presence of US Department of Defense-operated biolabs inside Ukraine. Russia’s concerns were validated on March 11, 2022 when Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland admitted during Congressional questioning that the Ukraine biolabs contained ‘biological materials’ which the US ‘did not want to fall into Russian hands’. While the pathogenic biological agents in these biolabs do not technically constitute bioweapons, they can become bioweapons once there is a ‘mechanism for spreading the agent.’ A delivery mechanism need not be sophisticated to be effective. Bioweapons researcher, Jeffrey Kaye, described the extreme level of US secrecy surrounding the biolabs. Kaye noted that the Director of the Pentagon’s Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, Robert Pope, did not reassure when he stated that, “the Ukraine biolabs currently did not have the ability to manufacture bioweapons.”
Russia’s Intervention Is Consistent with International Law
These four US-generated conditions represented urgent existential threats to the Donbas and to the Russian nation-state and contradict US claims that Russia ‘illegally invaded Ukraine’ and that Russia’s intervention was unprovoked. Russia was compelled to intervene militarily to neutralize these threats and its response is consistent with the United Nations Charter of 1945 concerning international rules governing a state’s use of military force. The United Nations allows two exceptions to its prohibition of the use of force in international law: “self-defence under Article 51, and military measures authorised by the Security Council in response to “any threat to the peace, breach of the peace or act of aggression.” In particular, the UN Charter notes, “there is no problem – and never has been – with that state, without first seeking Security Council approval, using military force ‘preemptively’.’ Both exceptions apply to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine: Russia perceived an imminent threat to the Donbas and an imminent threat to the Russian nation-state. The immediacy of these threats obviated any requirement that Russia seek prior UN Security Council approval. Seeking UN approval would be futile, in any case, because the United States, a permanent UN Security Council member, is the principal combatant generating the hostilities.
Under the Biden administration, what began in 2014 as a US proxy war against Russia in Ukraine transformed into the US’ direct war against Russia. The US’ covert and overt military actions establish it as a legal “co-belligerent.” Now, the US continues to flood Ukraine with billions of dollars of heavy weapons and provides intelligence to guide Ukraine’s attacks on Russian forces. The US blatantly states that it wants to “weaken” Russia and that Russia must be defeated. This is the US whose regime change wars in the Middle East killed 5 million; whose 1955-1975 war against Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia cost 3.4 million military and civilian lives. This is the US CIA whose coups and illegal interventions around the globe since its 1947 inception left a trail of bloodshed and chaos. Russia is legally and crucially defending the Donbas and the Russian nation-state against the US quest for global domination. The US generated four existential threats to the Donbas and to the Russian nation-state that necessitated Russia’s immediate intervention. The US—not Russia—is the illegal aggressor in Ukraine.
They say you can eat an elephant without choking, one bit at a time. This time the US stuffed the whole thing in its mouth, all at once. Albeit they did take many years to sneak up to the dinner table.
… Or the Coyote and the Roadrunner cartoons. The evil plots listed in the RAND paper are just like those of the Coyote in the cartoons – with similar results.
Children’s cartoons, like the selected spokes-puppets in government, are there to distract.
In the real world coyotes (43 mph) are much faster and more nimble than roadrunners (20 mph).
In the real world metaphor, Russia is the coyote.
Succinct and to the point. Would be nice to know more about Maria G., who is semantics scholar , or prof. of sociology, or both.
All the best, Spiral
Great writing. Thank you for your fabulous concise summary.
We need to hear more about the biolabs as that becomes possible, i am sure Hunter Biden needs more attention. Joe Biden is an arrogant delusional pecan, not to insult nuts…
But about what one comes to expect from the US of Arrogance.

Concur. Seems like an Anglo/Zionist operation to start a really big war. The demolition phase of “Build Back Better?”
Great article – one I can easily share with others to help remove the scales from their eyes.
The UN must realise that its very existence is at stake.
In its current form, it’s outdated. For example why are the UK & France still permanent members?
Why is Guterres still Secretary General?
Time to shake that tree and get rid of all the bad apples, actors.
The UN is as corrupt as the governments and corporations it serves.
Yah, Why does the EU get 2 votes, and India and the Islamic world got none?
Brilliant article…bravo Maria!
You managed to capture the salient points of this Natostan debacle of farcical self-canabalisation in just a few paragraphs.
I will file this one away carefully for future reference.

This is one of the best summaries of the why Russia was forced to act that I’ve seen published anywhere. This should be widely disseminated to every American.
Well done!
As a Guy from US, how would you feel, if/when foreign missiles fall on American cities? Or, foreign forces landing on American soil? Have you ever thought that might happen one day?
Russia is standing up for its security, sovereignty and stability.
Russia has successfully ended U$ Dollar’s position as a safe asset. This is a big accomplishment by itself in the global realm. It has increased urgency for De-Dollarization & De-Euroization, and enabled trade in national currencies. Hopefully, many nations will pursue trading in their sovereign national currencies and become sovereign. There is no sovereignty without monetary sovereignty.
Nations that end monetary imperialism successfully and build a better socioeconomic system will be viewed positively in the history. Humanity will be thankful to them. Let’s see which nations will rise to this challenge.
Here is a good issue, with many good articles, clearly framing Russia and NATO (Private Financial Empire).

Looks appetising, will bookmark for later consumption Max.
Brilliant. Boy, did I ever need this. I did read just about every available website and opinions, looked at pictures. But this article does allow me to take a deep breath, sigh and proclaim to myself… Yes, what I felt was exactly what this lady writes, except she is serving details, numbers, facts. Dear lady, I am grateful for having the opportunity to be enlightened. Frank
I no way doubt Russia is on legal ground, but what does it matter when G7 treat all International laws and treaties as a joke in anarchy?
It seems US lost the appetite for Ukraine after it became obvious they will loose on all parameters. What to do to maintain the war machinery and money laundering?
Back to old habits to lick the wounds: European and Saudi Elites Safari trips in Sahel, attacks on of small villages in Africa.
https://www.voltairenet.org/article217016.html “A new war is being prepared”.
Brother Tommy, the US may lose the Ukraine, but they have once again successfully crushed European and Japanese independence.
After World War II, the US unlike the rest of the world emerged unscathed from the horrors and destruction of War. America’s factories were humming, while European and Asian factories and labor were decimated. At that time, US manufacturing had total control of the world market with few competitors. However, by the late 1960s and early 1970s Europe and Japan were back ready to rival the US in production of industrial goods.
In 1971, the US abandoned the Gold Standard and allowed the dollar to float. It would have mean instant hyperinflation but Henry Kissinger at the behest of the Rockefeller family and the Nixon administration, negotiated the Petrodollar, by which OPEC countries sold their oil in US dollars in exchange for US protection.
However, the aftermath of the 1973 war between the Arab states and Israel, provided the US Deep State with a brilliant opportunity to secure US hegemony. In secret consultation with Saudi Arabia, Iran and other leading members of OPEC, Kissinger and friends manufactured first the Oil embargo and soon after the Oil Shock in which oil prices tripled overnight. Once again Europe, Japan and Asia were humbled at the feet of the United States. America with sufficient local gas and energy production survived and prospered during the storm.
Fast forward to 2022, the Americans may lose Ukraine but the resulting Oil and Gas prices have once again crushed their vassals in Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada.
Monsters always have multiple agendas.
In this way, the vassals will remain vassals for another fifty years.
Yeah, that was also my conclusion, and the vassals are working 24/7 to remain vassals. We can also say the vassals were letting themselves be eternal wagging vassals. They like it.
They were never brave enough to insist on their sovereignty, on the contrary they did and still do everything to please the tyrant.
Thus today we can recognize our real friends, the few who stood up and insisted on their Sovereign, their right to be men. Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba still, Hezbollah, maybe a couple more.
Iran I dont know, something is weird and hidden behind the curtain in this country. Rouhani and Sharif with triple passports and citizenship to US and Israel, and their children in British and US universities???
the right to be men
a lost art
hopefully, somewhere in the near future, REAL MEN in the US, Western Europe, Japan and elsewhere
will realize and accept their historic duty to defend their women, defend their families, defend their neighbors and restore their liberty from tyrannical governments occupied by criminals that represent interests antithetical to faith, family and freedom
While I am grateful for the structured justification and the references to historical events, it must be stated the collected banker-controlled West is a Mafia, i.e., a collection of competing petty gangsters, who unite for the common rape of the planet. They utilize debt, poisoned food, pornography, narcotics, music programming, movie programming, television programming, blackmail, prostitution, destruction of the family and woke culture to turn their castrated populations into pliable zombies, eager to support the latest idiotic cause.
For the past one hundred years, numerous nations, politicians and statemen have wasted their time, energy and ultimately the lives of their people by bending over backwards to be polite and cordial when attempting to negotiate with the Mafia. Their action were both futile and foolish.
Going forward, when dealing with Gangsters, Russia and the Free World should have only one response.
“Checkmate, Bitch.”
Gangsters All!

Excellent exposition.
It prompts the question: “Is Russia fighting the wrong war?”
The statement: “These four US-generated conditions represented urgent existential threats to the Donbas and to the Russian nation-state ” suggest strongly to me that Russia has a causus belli against the US. I don’t see any reason to obfuscate or hold back.
So the US bombings, invasions, occupations or regime change in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Vietnam,Cambodia, Grenada, Panama, Syria, Somalia,Cuba…. are okay but Russia? Or his about the US massacres at No Gun Ri, My Lai, Fallujah… or the concentration camp/torture centres at Abu Ghraib, Bagram, Guantanamo Bay….or the free fire zones or Agent Orange in Vietnam.. or the 1988 downing by the USS Vincennes of an Iranian airliner in Iranian waters and airspace …. Team America ( and its NATard enablers) … the masters of smash&grab foreign policy.
Yes, to the concise arguments in this article. And in response, what has Russia achieved in the three months of its legal and justified SMO?
1) Redefined how modern wars are fought, primarily that being to target the military, not the civilian.
2) Removed the spectre of resurgent Nazism from Europe.
3) Shown NATO to be a busted flush, a relic of the past Cold War
4) Dismantled Ukraine and reclaimed historic Novorossiya for itself
5) Set the world a multi-polar world to be established by all those nations who refused to be intimidated into an anti-Russian mindset.
6) In short, they’ve called the Yankee bluff of a unipolar rules based world order.
Not bad for three months work!
Yes and the drive a stake through the heart of the Federal reserve system of money control. When Putin who has fuel to sell and demanded payments in Rubles it liberated itself from the Zionist sanctions imposed by the imbecile Biden.
True :-D.
7. Made the Ruble stronger than the USD.
8. Increased the revenues in the period by $100 billion.
Not a bad deal with someone who want to break the neck and “outspend Russia”.
And drove a wedge between eu & otan members (Hungary on sanctions, Turkey on accepting new otan members). That rot inside the otan tree will likely eventually lead to its downfall when its root becomes weaker.
Brilliantly concise. Spread it widely, especially to your elected representatives if you live in the West.
Great essay;
Only need more on the DPR and LPR for they also invited the RF in.
Thanks Maria.
A perfect manual of how to use “International law” and UN classification world wide, not only no protect “the international community” aka NATO and Oceania allies.
Whatever international “rule” applies to Isreal when bombing neighbourhood (in name of imminent naitional threat) should also apply to Serbia or Russia.
For many of us, the shades and blinds came off a long time ago. Vietnam certainly peeled the scales of my eyes and Iraq and Afghanistan left no doubt in my mind.
The US is the Evil Empire, it will kill you, subjugate you in any way possible to get hold of what it wants. It will not allow peer competitors (Russia, just eradicate them with a massive strike), we will never be free before this stain on humanity is utterly destroyed. The American people, Faack them, stupid masses hold in chains, too coward to break their chains, serfs, slaves, all believing in “the shining light on the hill”, there is no such thing with a government mired in corruption and pilfering, theft and imperialism. The US needs a cleansing fire of destruction heaped upon it, you eradicate Evil with Evil.
Leaves out the death over the past 8 years of over 13,000 people of the DPR and LPR by constant shell by Ukraine and the terrorism of the residents by Ukrainian Nazis.
Time for a “to all e-mail.”
What would be a very smart move on Russia’s part would be to offer to trade the two high profile British mercenaries for Julian Assange and then release him. It would be a huge PR win along with freeing a persecuted journalist.
Dear Bill, that would be great for Julian personally, but the Empire would then claim the exchange proved him “a Russian agent”. Russia is not in a position to win the propaganda war.
Wow, what a great report.
This is what I’ve been waiting to see since February and I hope that very soon the collective West catches on.
Thanks for this Ms Gritsch…much appreciated.
It’s very interesting how Russia has played this round in the great game, one gets the impression that they have been waiting for this for years, all the moves from the West have been parlayed and in some cases used against the West themselves in a Judo like manner, especially the economic sanctions and seizing of Russian reserves in Western countries.
This is I believe will be the final nail in the coffin for the dollar, China has got the message loud and clear, so have any other countries that wish to be independent/soverign nations(Brazil, India, BRICS), etc. The dollar is strong right now, but it’s just an illusion. I believe as the dust eventually settles in the next few years we will see a multipolar sovereign financial world for some countries.
It’s important to note that Russia has won only this round, it’s not over for the Western elite they will have to go back to the drawing board for the next round.
I’m sure it was a big shock to the Western elite to see the Russian public unite behind Russia and Putin and the Russian military fight in a very professional manner for the most part. The emergence of the Chechen fighters and their effectiveness is also interesting as they are Muslim(most I think) and cannot be easy coopted by the Western propaganda and to see then perform effectively and with modern weaponry is going to be a problem for US allies in the Middle East especially Israel, other Muslim groups might get ideas and it will be hard to handle them. I suppose this is why Israel is very careful not to antagonize the Russians.
I expect pretty soon we will at the stage were Russia starts to shoot down NATO ISR assets in the black sea, especially the unmanned expensive drones. I suspect Russia will at some point inflict a direct loss of life on US or preferably UK assets in Ukraine/Black Sea/Moldova as NATO/US does not want to escalate to direct conflict.
Yes it’s a heart warming affair seeing Muslims fight for ethical reasons like in the good old days and not as for hire terrorists for the Yankee dollar.
Broadly this is an excellent argument, but in my view it sadly misses two important points. Neither are legally essential to the arguments, but each substantially increases the weight of the arguments and substantially undercuts counter-arguments.
1) The pre-emptive argument for responding to the threat to the lives of Donbass residents, as presented, is couched in terms of the alleged “Responsibility to Protect” or R2P. As a putative principle in international law in the couple of decades or so since first propounded it has been very comprehensively discredited. It was never an established legal principle, and was first propounded as a fig-leaf for illegal wars of aggression by the US and NATO. In fact, in every case in which it has been used as a justification for war – exclusively by the US/NATO (I exclude the current Special Operation in Ukraine because that has independently multiple overwhelming legal bases) – the human rights grounds used to justify the action were subsequently proven to be fabricated. For example, the alleged Serbian genocide at Sebrenica has been proven to have been fabricated by NATO to justify bombing campaigns which were themselves in fact genocidal. The alleged massacres and mass-rapes by Ghaddafi forces used to justify the invasion of Libya were – according to a report issued by the UK parliament itself – was fabricated out of whole cloth by MI6 in total contradiction of the facts as MI6 knew at the time.
The very notion of “Responsibility to Protect” is intrinsically highly problematic in legal terms. there were forces (i.e. US/UK/NATO) who were pushing it hard because they wanted to exploit it for their own benefit, but it has never at any point in time been established and widely accepted as a valid legal principle, because it is irreconcileably in conflict with long established principles of sovereignty. If the US or some other country thousands of miles away seeks to assert that some country X is genociding some of its citizens, a reasonable third party observer would be justified in questioning whether the assertions are indeed founded in fact, or fiction. Even a decade ago many would and did argue that the notion of “Responsibility to Protect” had been utterly discredited and din not in fact exist as a legitimate legal principle.
Yet Russia is not thousands of miles away, the people of Donbass are ethnically Russian, they are immediate neighbours, a great many have Russian citizenship as dual nationals, and together with many other conditions these conditions give rise to far more substantive and legally legitimate grounds for war. In particular, the fact that the two Donbass republics had declared independence after overwhelming popular support in a referendum – a right recognised by the UN Charter. After Russia formally recognised the two republics they formally requested protection from Russia against deadly threats from Ukraine, and again the military support in fact provided by Russia is explicitly and unambigously authorised by the UN Charter.
Thus as far as the genocide and threat of genocide aspect is concerned, it would be far better to rely on the firmly grounded rights of Russia under the UN Charter than on in fact illegitimate and comprehensively discredited notions of “Responsibility to Protect” that have been so thoroughly debased by US/UK/NATO.
The fact that it has been done in the past does not make R2P a legitimate legal principle – it has been done in the past, and subsequently – c.f. Serbia and Libya – rightly and comprehensively denounced as illegal.
2) Regarding bioweapons, “While the pathogenic biological agents in these biolabs do not technically constitute bioweapons, they can become bioweapons once there is a ‘mechanism for spreading the agent.’ A delivery mechanism need not be sophisticated to be effective.”
According to the bioweapons convention these pathogens are specifically banned even without specific mechanisms for distribution – and furthermore if I am not mistaken they are specifically defined as bioweapons even without any specific mechanism for distribution.
In addition to that, what I am missing here is a mention of specific and substantial research that the US has carried out in Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukraine government researching the migration of birds that migrate over large areas of Russia, and mechanisms exploiting migrating birds for distributing pathogens as a bioweapon. Furthermore, according to documents found by Russia in Ukraine during the special operation, Ukraine not only is in the possession of a mechanism for distribution of pathogens, but has already deployed deadly pathogens offensively against Russia, by means of wild geese that have already been tagged with vials of pathogens controlled by a microchip that can at any time be triggered to release the pathogens by the US using a satelite that permanently monitors the microchips. Also Ukraine has already distributed dangerous bioweapons in the Donbass impregnated on fake Russian bank notes, and has already carried out illegal bioweapons experimentation on patients of a psychiatric hospital in Mariupal.
You are right about R2P. That’s why Russia recognized the independence of the two republics requested by the Duma and signed an agreement of friendship and mutual assistance before coming to the assistance of the two republics under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
I explained all that and more in a separate comment, which you might want to look at.
I explained all that and more in a separate comment, which you might want to look at.
There is a comprehensive discussion that I particularly like of the U.N. charter rights aspect also here:

The Ukrainians in the western and central part of the former Ukraine are/were so Russian-hating that they’d allow themselves to governed by a Jew and even die for a Jew. Very strange!
What is more: one who is a native Russian speaker as first language not Ukrainian!
This is a good summery of recent events; however, it misses some of the hard evidence. Circumstantial evidence doesn’t necessarily make in a court of law.
Some of the missing elements (or elements not defined clear enough):
– Ukraine failed to implement the Minsk peace accord during the last 8 years while being rearmed by Nato members (UK, US, Canada).
– The Guarantors of Minsk II, France and Germany, failed in their duty to take measures for implementing the peace accord during almost 7 years.
– Ukraine officially abandoned the Minsk II peace process in March 2021 by issuing Presidential Decree 117, which stipulates the conquest of Crimea and the Donbas by military force.
– Again France and Germany failed in their duty as Guarantors of Minsk II and France failed in its duty as permanent member of the US Security Council by failing to respect UN Resolution 2202, which ratified the Minsk II peace accord. Neither France nor Germany protested the violation of Minsk II or the subsequent Ukrainian troop build-up in the Donbas.
– Until Feb. 2022, Putin always refused to recognize the independence of the republics of Luhansk and Donets, which he wanted to stay part of Ukraine as autonomous regions.
– Contrary to Ukrainian claims, no Russian troops were present in the two republics prior to Feb. 24, 2022.
– Biden predicted a Russian attack for Feb. 16th because he knew that Ukraine would start its assault on the Donbas on Feb. 16h and Biden expected Russia to respond.
– Russia did not respond. Instead the civilian population from the line of contact in the Donbas was evacuated to Russia.
– According to OSCE observers, Ukrainian shelling of the Donbas increased 10 fold on the 16th, 20 fold on the 17th and 40 fold on the 18th of February, 2022.
– On Feb. 21th, the Russian Duma requested that Putin recognize the independence of the two Republics. Putin recognized the independence on the 22nd and signed an agreement of mutual assistance on the 23rd before launching the special operation on the 24th under Article 51 of the UN Charter to assist the two republics under attack by Ukrainian forces. Contrary to the brutal wars of aggression led by the US on false pretexts, Putin is careful to respect international law.
– Crimea was not “annexed” by Russia. On the contrary, Crimea was annexed by force by Ukraine in 1995. Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Crimea voted on Jan. 20th, 1990, to become an independent republic under the laws of the Soviet Union. Ukraine only became independent by referendum on Dec. 1st, 1990. Crimea stayed an independent republic until March 17th, 1995, when Ukraine toppled the Crimean government and removed its president by force. Following the illegal US-engineered nationalist coup of Feb. 2014 and the repression of Russian native speakers in Ukraine, Crimea voted again to become independent since it did not recognize the illegal junta of Kyiv.
– Thus, for 8 years the West has sanctioned Russia without any justification whatsoever.
– While Zelensky campaigns on a platform promising peace in the Donbas, his campaign manager and current advisor Oleksiy Arestovych predicted in an interview in 2019 that Ukraine will have to fight a war against Russia in 2021 or 2022 as price for being admitted to Nato. He clearly states that war and Nato membership are better than peace with Russia.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwcwGSFPqIo
– Already in 2016, US Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain explain to Ukrainian troops in the presence of president Poroshenko that the US will do everything to help Ukraine fight a proxy war against Russia.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeWHviwLMy8
We all know that this isn’t about Ukraine. This is about US imperialism using Ukraine as proxy to destroy Russia. The sanctions target the civilian population of Russia to increase the pain level and make them rise up against their government. That’s what Western allies have done since WWII when they deliberated targeted civilian populations by carpet bombings and by nuclear bombs. That’s what they did in Iraq to kill half a million children. It didn’t work in WWII, it didn’t work in Iraq, and it doesn’t work now. It never works. Yet these sadists can’t stop tormenting civilians.
All of the above is carefully documented in Jacques Baud’s latest book “Poutine, le maitre du jeu” and summarized in his public speeches, for example:

Hi Humwava, Gilgamesh told me to send you his greetings :-), some comments on you useful post:
«Biden predicted a Russian attack for Feb. 16th because he knew that Ukraine would start its assault on the Donbas on Feb. 16h and Biden expected Russia to respond. According to OSCE observers, Ukrainian shelling of the Donbas increased 10 fold on the 16th, 20 fold on the 17th and 40 fold on the 18th of February, 2022.»
The point here is that there was no “threat” of an ukrainian government attack on the Donbas because the ukrainian government’s military forces had been attacking the Donbas continuously since the Mariupol massacre of 8 may 2014, regardless of the Minsk treaties, which the ukrainian government and NATO probably only agreed to as temporary and fake truces to rearm and train the ukrainian fascist regiments for a “final solution” to the Donbas problem.
«Crimea was not “annexed” by Russia. 1st, 1990.»
Something that no “Washington Consensus” media seem to be willing to mention.
«Crimea stayed an independent republic until March 17th, 1995, when Ukraine toppled the Crimean government and removed its president by force.»
Not quite, it was temporarily a member republic of the Ukrainian SSR and then of Ukraine until it tried to become a member of the Russian Federation:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26681653
”Because Mr Meshkov was the first – and so far only – president of Crimea. He was elected in 1994, by a landslide, on a platform of reuniting the Ukrainian peninsula with Russia. Like an eager suitor, he hopped on a plane to Moscow… only to find his overtures to Boris Yeltsin rebuffed. The Russian president was far too concerned with building a relationship with the West to stir up the kind of trouble that annexing Crimea would have brought.”
Ironically much the same happened in 2014 when Vladimir Putin rebuffed the Donbas republics for the same reasons:
https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2014/05/10/ukra-m10.html
“Desperate to reach an accommodation with Washington, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday urged pro-Russian eastern Ukrainians to abandon planned separatist or autonomy referenda set for Sunday. But these efforts have been rebuffed by Washington. Putin is unable to control the resistance that has spread across eastern Ukraine”
«We all know that this isn’t about Ukraine. This is about US imperialism using Ukraine as proxy to destroy Russia.»
That is not the main goal, because as someone said famously “President Obama … explaining that Russia is basically a gnat on the butt of an elephant”. The really big prize is using an “ukrainized” Russian Federation as a proxy to destroy China, by setting up a “comprador” oligarchic government in it that will “invite” the USA to setup on the northern and western boarders of China a ring of biowar labs and CIA/DOD bases to train, fund and arm large numbers of “freedom fighters” inside China, hoping to split it and dominate it as during and after the fall of the Manchu dynasty.
Russia needs to put out an international arrest warrant on all those behind this UKN situation from the 2013 Orange Movement to the Biolabs and War that was planned for March 2022.
And charges laid in absentia and go to trial even if they cannot be apprehended.
Main culprits are Soros, Obama, Brennan and all their backers in the EU.
Which effectively means this WEF Davos Group.
And underlings like Biden, Pelosi, Romney, Cheney etc….
Yes, all those reptiles in their ivory towers must be relieved of their rights, dragged into the open away from their comfort zones, be targeted at their ritual gatherings.
This is a ‘Class War’
Russia hold the chips (Energy, Food, Natural Resources ) and after bankrupting the West the Financiers desperately need a new host.
No one of sound mind believes Russian ethnicity to be inferior. They hate Russians for their freedoms, their wealth of resources, for throwing a spanner into their world domination initiatives. Their efforts to dehumanise Russians, like the Chinese is to justify their attacks on them.
There’s a wariness, a respect for Russians among the majority of westerners.
Then there’s the DUAL citizen (or should I say TRI ) , grandparents, parents, Eastern European, Polish, Czech, Hungarian Zionists cum American/Brit . . . , the Neocon and The CROWN/Establishment.
Then there’s the regional stuff; In the Mid-East countries are wary of a strong Iran (Sunnis for main); In Africa it’s Nigeria. Goes without saying, that regionally, butt-hurt Baltic countries (overflowing with Nazi or sons of Nazi collaborators) are being used to foment anti-Russian sentiment.
Everyone of good mind & heart knows that when they walk into a Russian restaurant in say Cologne/Koln, Germany, they’ll receive a hearty welcome and a good feed with refreshment at a reasonable price. . . . unless of course they disrespect the host.
Can never agree with Andrei on the snow nigger reference. In no way does anyone bar the brain dead Nazi & the butt-hurt Zionist/Elite view Russians in the same manner/light as the sand-nigger or plain old nigger. Cecil Rhodes & Rothschild set the bar on the value of African lives and the dehumanisation was the weapon they used to subdue/placate the guilt of westerners. Unfortunately there were many African/Arabic collaborators who sold out their people for the perceived power bestowed upon them by Whitey.

It is a “class war” perhaps but not in that sense: USA/UK based multinationals have been able to have factories, shops, etc. in the RF for many years, and to share the profits from RF natural resources. The real prize as I argue elsewhere is instead China, via putting anti-China biowar labs and CIA/DOD bases on the north and west borders of China.
The class war aspect is actually where Putin is weakest: the political offer the USA makes to its protectorates is pretty much the same that the English Empire made to the arab sheikdoms and several indian princely states: we guarantee that your oligarchy (“our bastards” in the words of an USA president) remains in power if you cede us control of your military and foreign affairs and a a chunk of your economy goes to our multinationals. It is basically an offer that the USA will be on the side of the oligarchies in their class war against the lower-middle and lower classes, pushing up rentier’s profits and pushing down labor’s wages.
The problem with the Russian Federation is that by and large Putin has adopted the same economic model and the same type of class war, but the political offer by the RF is not quite as good as that of the USA to the upper-middle and upper classes: the vastness and power of the USA “protection” co-prosperity sphere is rather better than that of the RF one. Access to the USA markets and those of its other protectorates is more valuable than access to the RF markets and those of Belarus or Kazakhstan.
Therefore the USA political offer has been eagerly accepted by most EU mass oligarchies (“mass” as they include the upper-middle classes), by the ukrainian oligarchs and by many members of the Russian Federation mass oligarchies (what “The Saker” call the 5th/6th column).
That’s the big long term problem for the RF: it is competing with the USA on the same political ground. The USSR had a much better strategy, because the political offer of the USSR was targeted at the lower-middle and lower classes, that is it was not the offer of the same system to the same oligarchs but with smaller benefits, but the offer of a different system to the class adversaries of the oligarchs.
The only country that can offer the elites (upper and where applicable upper-middle classes) of minor states “protection” with benefits similar to those of the USA is China, and indeed the oligarchies of places like the UK (and to some extent Italy) have been eager to try to position themselves to benefit from chinese favors, until the USA recently decided to surround and isolate China precisely to stop the oligarchies of their protectorates from switching to China.
Thank you Maria for such an excellent and concise article making a compelling case for the Russian Federation’s SMO and for Russia to bring the US and NATO to justice for their long standing aggression against their country and malignant interference in her sovereignty.
I wish your writings could be read and digested by all those sheeple in the collective west who swallow the bile and propaganda of the US and it’s sidekicks.
This is not very popular thing to say but in modern warfare there are actually less civilian and military casualties than during early and mid 20th century warfare. Troops are much more decentralized and there are much less combat soldiers per battle zone square kilometer than 60-120 years ago.
I don’t take claims of tens of thousands of soldiers killed in Ukrainean War during first 100 days very seriously. Both RF MoD and especially Ukrainean High Command are highly exaggerating enemy losses. Same have to say about enemy material losses. Critical thinking needed.
“Both exceptions apply to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine: Russia perceived an imminent threat to the Donbas and an imminent threat to the Russian nation-state. The immediacy of these threats obviated any requirement that Russia seek prior UN Security Council approval. Seeking UN approval would be futile, in any case, because the United States, a permanent UN Security Council member, is the principal combatant generating the hostilities.”
This sounds like some mental gymnastics to explain why Russia didn’t seek UN approval or at the least formally raise the prospect of intervention in the Donbas. Instead, if my memory is correct, Russia was busy announcing that their massed troops were merely conducting exercises and not planning an invasion. The above is as such an incoherent argument.
Furthermore, the Ukrainians may have massed their troops in response to the massing of Russian troops. They would be stupid not to. What came first, the chicken or the egg?
There was no immediate existential threat to Russia in February and there remains no immediate existential threat today or Russia would be acting with more urgency. These claims are excessive hyperbole.
how do you explain all the trenches and bunkers on the ukrainian side of contact line in Donbass…6
Excellent article Maria Gritsch including the 2019 RAND ORGANIZATION REPORT. Thankyou.
Has anyone seen such arrogance as this fool, then Senator Joe Biden talking down to Scott Ritter over WMD in Iraq? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecH1SI9ufr8
The problem with all these arguments about USA undermining of RF security is that is entirely legitimate aim of foreign policy, and that collective security is indivisible is just preaching. In any case for reacting against USA/Ukraine aggression against the RF the correct procedure would have been to seek the support of the U.N. security council or general assembly first.
However there is indeed the much better argument that the fascist ukrainian government started a vicious war of aggression against the Donbas, and once finally the RF recognized the Donbas states, and signed a defense treaty with them, all under the U.N. Charter, the *actual* continuing war of aggression against the Donbas was a sufficient reason for a counter-attack. There is no need to say that “125,000 Ukraine forces amassed along the border of Donbass in December of 2021”, the existing ukrainian fascist military forces were already attacking the Donbas states.
«Anticipating an imminent massacre, Russia was obligated to intervene militarily because it had a Responsibility to Protect (R2P) the citizens of Donbass. R2P is a political commitment to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity; it was endorsed by the United Nations at its 2005 world summit.»
But the massacres started in 2014, most notably with the 9 may 2014 Mariupol massacre:
https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2014/05/10/ukra-m10.html
«10 May 2014
With the open support of Washington and its European allies, the regime installed by Washington and Berlin in last February’s fascist-led putsch is now extending its reign of terror against all popular resistance in Ukraine. That is the significance of the events in the major eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol yesterday. After tanks, armoured personnel carriers and heavily armed troops were unleashed on unarmed civilians in the city, the Kiev regime claimed to have killed some 20 people. The Obama administration immediately blamed the violent repression on “pro-Russian separatists.”
The violence bore all the hallmarks of a calculated provocation on the 69th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Red Army. […] These admirers of Hitler and his Ukrainian collaborators are now serving, with Washington’s full support, as the regime’s shock troops against popular opposition centred in the industrialised east of the country as well as in Russian-speaking centres such as Odessa in the south. The same forces have been given free rein to attack anyone in the west of the country who dares to oppose the fascistic government in Kiev.»
My guess is that reason why pro-Putin propaganda uses the “imminent attack” argument seems to be that they want to avoid saying that for 8 years the RF was not able to do that “responsibility to protect” and let the Donbas population be massacred by the ukrainian fascist government because it was too weak. Consider the very different fates of Donbas and Crimea: in Crimea the request for membership of the Russian Federation was accepted, and there were no massacres and only a handful of deaths, but in Donbas there have been 8 years of massacres and misery:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Donbas
«3,393 civilians killed (349 in 2016–2021)
13,100–13,300 killed; 29,500–33,500 wounded overall
414,798 Ukrainians internally displaced; 925,500 fled abroad»
https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/least-among-us-war-donbas-terrorizing-ukraines-most-vulnerable-citizens/
«The deep anger toward both Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko (I was told by one young woman, a native of Donetsk, that “this is Poroshenko’s war”) and an equally deep sense of alienation from the Ukrainian state in Kiev are equally unmistakable. One young mother told us “there is no ‘back’ to Ukraine for Donbas.” If Poroshenko and his cheerleaders in the Obama administration and the US Congress believe that an economic blockade, Kiev’s deployment of snipers, the shelling of Donbas’s civilians and a proposal to send American weapons with which to facilitate the shelling is the recipe for winning eastern Ukrainian “hearts and minds” they couldn’t be more wrong. Yet, tellingly, this is the strategy Poroshenko himself laid out last November in a speech in which he declared:“Our children will go to schools and kindergartens, theirs will be holed up in the basements. Because they are not able to do a thing. This is exactly how we will win this war!” Well, he may have half the job done. The little children we saw are indeed cowering in filthy conditions in underground Soviet-era bomb shelters. Our hearty band of neoconservative war boosters — from Rutgers University professor Alexander Motyl to the mendacious Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland — might take a moment to consider the misery which their backing of Kiev has brought in its train, though of course they will not.
[…] It is hard to escape the conclusion that the Russian-speaking population of the Donbas is being subjected to a conscious campaign of dehumanization that is being waged primarily by private armies funded by Ukrainian oligarchs. Because the people of the Donbas are ethnic Russian speakers, their suffering is discounted. After all, how could people who are seen to be positively disposed to Mr. Putin’s Russia and are fighting an American-backed government in Kiev be deserving of our sympathy? […] Professor Motyl, a vocal supporter of the Kiev regime, has called residents of the Donbas “the most retrograde part of [Ukraine’s] population” comparing the Donbas to the Jim Crow–era American South. And indeed, the Kiev government and its representatives in Kiev have repeatedly attempted to dehumanize them by referring to them as “terrorists” and as “subhumans.”»
“The problem with all these arguments about USA undermining of RF security is that is entirely legitimate aim of foreign policy…”
In what sense is it “entirely legitimate” for the “USA” to “undermine” the security of the Russian Federation? It certainly violates the spirit of the UN Charter.
“…and that collective security is indivisible is just preaching.”
Whatever that’s supposed to mean.
“In any case for reacting against USA/Ukraine aggression against the RF the correct procedure would have been to seek the support of the U.N. security council or general assembly first.”
LOL! You don’t really expect to make a statement like this and still be taken seriously, do you?
«to dismember and asset-strip Russia – to appropriate its coveted oil, gas, and mineral resources and vast agricultural lands–and to enable US investors’ access to Russia’s economy.»
But that is a superficial reading of the situation:
* Plenty of USA multinationals had already got access to all of those with Putin, even if not quite as unrestricted as with Yeltsin. Plenty of branches of USA brands in every RF city.
* Also the USA elites have often argued that keeping Russia as an enemy was important to the funding of the military-industrial-congress complex. That’s why Putin’s request for NATO membership was denied.
What has changed is that the USA elites have decided that they have a real enemy, which is the People’s Republic of China, and that they no longer need “Russia” as a fake enemy.
What the NATO expansion east and the “yeltsinization” of Ukraine are meant to achieve is to trigger the “yeltsinization” of the Russian Federation itself, and the reason for that is that the new “aligned” governments of uralic and eastern Siberia would “invite” the USA to set up a chain of biological war labs and of DOD/CIA bases on the northern and western (if the RF is “ukrainized” then Kazakhstan goes the same way) borders of China, from which to train, fund and arm large numbers of “freedom fighters” in every border region of China.
That is the a very big prize, and the USA will take big risks (at the expense of several european countries, and mainly Ukraine itself) to achieve it. Which means that preserving the RF is a vital interest of the PRC to avoid their “yeltinization” and breakup too.
«for reacting against USA/Ukraine aggression against the RF the correct procedure would have been to seek the support of the U.N. security council or general assembly first.»
The problem here is that while preventing being surrounded by hostile states is a legitimate justification of any state’s *foreign policy*, under the U.N. Charter it is not a legitimate justification of *military operations*, which are only justified in case of imminent or actual attack against a state or its allies (as in Donbas) or as authorized by the U.N. itself (in case of “responsibility to protect”, as in Katanga in the 1950s).
So Putin’s argument about the RF defending against being surrounded by hostile states are quite legitimate as to foreign policy, but the “special military operation” is legitimate if related to the ukrainian government’s war of aggression against the people of the Donbas.
Who is Maria Gritsch?
She does not quote the most important part part of Art. 51 of the UN Charter – that individual self defence is allowed when an attack has occurred (“,,,if an armed attack occurs”….). The right to self defence in international law is a difficult issue and highly controversial. Whether Russia’s intervention in Ukraine is legal is an open question. There is no consensus in academia on pre-emptive action and the law on the matter is not settled. In any case Russia would have to provide clear strong evidence of an imminent existential danger that it had to counter.

But the attack had occurred, it was not a pre-emptive action, the attack had started on 9 may 2014 with the Mariupol massacre. This is the war of aggressions by the ukrainian government against the right to autonomy and independence of the people of the Donbas:
* Until February 2022 the Russian Federation “let it happen” because the Russian Federation government regarded the Donbas as an internal region of Ukraine (just the Chechenya was an internal region of the Russian Federation).
* In February 2022 the Russian Federation recognized the independence of the Donbas and signed with them a defense treaty similar to the North Atlantic Treaty, and the ukrainian government’s war of aggression against the Donbas continued and Article 51 applies to a state or any allied states, so for example if Moldova were to attack North Atlantic Treaty member Romania, any other member like Norway would have the U.N. charter right (but not obligation) to counter-attack Moldova.

Thanks for the great essay.
“Under the Biden administration, what began in 2014 as a US proxy war against Russia in Ukraine transformed into the US’ direct war against Russia. The US’ covert and overt military actions establish it as a legal “co-belligerent.” Now, the US continues to flood Ukraine with billions of dollars of heavy weapons and provides intelligence to guide Ukraine’s attacks on Russian forces. The US blatantly states that it wants to “weaken” Russia and that Russia must be defeated.”
This seems to be the most unknown/underappreciated aspect of this conflict; at least in the U.S. Based on my personal experience, most people seem to have no idea whatsoever of the risks that the Satanic U.S. “government” is taking and the danger it poses to the whole world.
When Trump exited the INF treaty, escalated tensions everywhere and reinstituted cold-war provocations against Russia and China, the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists” moved the “doomsday clock” ahead to “100 seconds to ‘midnight'” and justifiably so. But now that “Biden” has made things even worse – much worse – the “clock” seems to be “stuck.” Surely the words and deeds of “Biden” have increased the risk of “doomsday,” yet the “clock” doesn’t move.
And I wonder: Where’s the voice of the “World Mental Health Coalition” in all of this madness? Trump the psychopath was a danger to all life on this planet but “Biden” isn’t?
Really excellent synopsis, Maria!
Two quibbles, though. First, you write:
“In particular, the UN Charter notes, “there is no problem – and never has been – with that state, without first seeking Security Council approval, using military force ‘preemptively’.”
That isn’t actually noted in the UN Charter at all, but is an excerpt from Gareth Evans’ speech, to which you also link. (I don’t disagree, except for the citation specified.)
Second, the revelations concerning the US biolabs are too after-the-fact to justify the SMO other than retrospectively, since those only manifested as a result of the SMO.
However, I agree wholeheartedly with the spirit of what you wrote. Bravo!
«the revelations concerning the US biolabs are too after-the-fact to justify the SMO other than retrospectively, since those only manifested as a result of the SMO.»
* The biolabs cannot justify a military operation; they are a threat, but potential threats do not justify military operations, only actual or actually immiment attacks justify them under the U.N. Charter.
* The biowarfare labs in Ukraine were known well before the “special military operation”, they were documented in various USA-Ukraine treaties and USA defense appropriation bills and other official news. They are not just in Ukraine but in several other ex-USSR and ex-COMECON countries. This is from 5 years ago, and it reports they were known 9 years ago:
http://tiis.org/index.php/2017/08/29/us-military-bio-labs-in-ukraine-production-of-bio-weapons-and-disease-causing-agents/
“In 2015, American alternative media outlet InfoWars accused the Pentagon of developing new types of biological weapons in secret military laboratories in Ukraine. The facilities were constructed under the terms of the bilateral agreement signed between the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Department of Defense in 2012.
Today thirteen American military bio-labs operate in Ukraine, The International Mass Media Agency reports. They employ only American specialists being entirely funded from the budget of the Department of Defense. Local authorities have pledged not to interfere in their work. These military labs are reported to be mainly involved in the study and production of disease-causing agents of smallpox, anthrax and botulism. The facilities are located in the following Ukrainian cities: Odessa, Vinnytsia, Uzhgorod, Lviv (three), Kharkiv, Kyiv (four), Kherson, Ternopil.”
«They are not just in Ukraine but in several other ex-USSR and ex-COMECON countries. This is from 5 years ago, and it reports they were known 9 years ago:»
“They employ only American specialists being entirely funded from the budget of the Department of Defense. Local authorities have pledged not to interfere in their work.”
I hope everybody notices the the issue here: if the are entirely staffed by USA military people and they are extra-territorial, why are they in Ukraine, Kzakhstan Georgia, etc. and not in the USA itself? Why send USA military people to do “research against infectious diseases” all the way to Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, etc. to work in absolute isolation? I can imagine two main reasons:
* They are so dangerous that the USA military don’t want to put them in the USA, not even in say Alaska or the Nevada desert.
* Their research benefits from being near the Russian Federation or among populations with a genetic profile similar to that of many people living in the Russian federation.
I suspect that both reasons may be part of the answer.
https://www.salon.com/2013/08/29/the_us_is_building_a_bioweapons_lab_in_kazakhstan_newscred/
“The biolabs cannot justify a military operation; they are a threat, but potential threats do not justify military operations, only actual or actually immiment attacks justify them under the U.N. Charter.”
In your personal opinion, that is. And the U.S. “government” would disagree with you about that. According to the U.S. “government,” Russia would be perfectly justified in taking military action against the biolabs:
“For centuries, international law recognized that nations need not suffer an attack before they can lawfully take action to defend themselves against forces that present an imminent danger of attack. Legal scholars and international jurists often conditioned the legitimacy of preemption on the existence of an imminent threat—most often a visible mobilization of armies, navies, and air forces preparing to attack.
We must adapt the concept of imminent threat to the capabilities and objectives of today’s adversaries. Rogue states and terrorists do not seek to attack us using conventional means. They know such attacks would fail. Instead, they rely on acts of terror and, potentially, the use of weapons of mass destruction—weapons that can be easily concealed, delivered covertly, and used without warning.
The targets of these attacks are our military forces and our civilian population, in direct violation of one of the principal norms of the law of warfare. As was demonstrated by the losses on September 11, 2001, mass civilian casualties is the specific objective of terrorists and these losses would be exponentially more severe if terrorists acquired and used weapons of mass destruction.
The United States has long maintained the option of preemptive actions to counter a sufficient threat to our national security. The greater the threat, the greater is the risk of inaction— and the more compelling the case for taking anticipatory action to defend ourselves, even if uncertainty remains as to the time and place of the enemy’s attack. To forestall or prevent such hostile acts by our adversaries, the United States will, if necessary, act preemptively.” (The National Security Strategy of the United States of America 2002, p. 15).
“* The biowarfare labs in Ukraine were known well before the “special military operation”, they were documented in various USA-Ukraine treaties and USA defense appropriation bills and other official news. They are not just in Ukraine but in several other ex-USSR and ex-COMECON countries. This is from 5 years ago, and it reports they were known 9 years ago:”
So what? Many things have happened in recent years which would make the biolabs an increasingly worrisome threat, long overdue to be dealt with, e.g. U.S. government collecting Russian DNA.
«The United States has long maintained the option of preemptive actions to counter a sufficient threat to our national security.»
Exercising that option would be a war crime under the U.N. Charter, and indeed the USA have exercised that option several times. But the USA of course are exempt from the U.N. Charter:
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/History_of_the_Peloponnesian_War/Book_5
“we shall not trouble you with specious pretences — either of how we have a right to our empire because we overthrew the Mede, or are now attacking you because of wrong that you have done us — and make a long speech which would not be believed; and in return we hope that you, instead of thinking to influence us by saying that you did not join the Lacedaemonians, although their colonists, or that you have done us no wrong, will aim at what is feasible, holding in view the real sentiments of us both; since you know as well as we do that right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.”
“Exercising that option would be a war crime under the U.N. Charter…”
In your personal opinion that is, and under the circumstances this is academic. (BTW just FYI contrary to what you stated or implied in your earlier comment, the UN Charter actually doesn’t address the issue of anticipatory self-defense at all; the phrase “imminent attack” appears nowhere in the text of the charter).
“…and indeed the USA have exercised that option several times. But the USA of course are exempt from the U.N. Charter:”
Obviously, the with the lawless, terroristic USA as a permanent member of the security council, the UN is defunct and the charter is toilet paper, just like the U.S. constitution
There is also the appeal of the Ukrainian president:
“I appeal to the President of Russia Vladimir V. Putin to use the armed forces of the Russian Federation to re-establish the rule of law, peace, order, stability and to protect the people of Ukraine.”
It is an illegal US-Nazi aggression against Ukraine like after WW2:
“Under Operation Sunrise, some 5,000 anti-communist Eastern European
and Russian personnel were trained for operational missions at a camp
at Oberammergau in 1946, under the command of General Sikes and SS
General Burckhardt. This and related initiatives supported
insurgencies in areas such as Ukraine, which were not entirely
supressed by the Soviets until 1956.”
https://web.archive.org/web/20000517211840/http://fas.org:80/irp/world/germany/intro/gehlen.htm
“The BND, the West German intelligence service under former Wehrmacht
Gen. Reinhard Gehlen, formed a new relationship with Bandera. It was
a natural union. During the war, Gehlen’s senior officers argued that
the USSR could be broken up if only Germany wooed the various
nationalities properly. Bandera had continued lines into the Ukraine,
and in March 1956 he offered these in return for money and
weapons.”

«Gehlen’s senior officers argued that the USSR could be broken up if only Germany wooed the various nationalities properly.»
Ah the ironies of history! That was the same plan as that of the pre-1939 fascist polish government:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheism
“a political project initiated by Józef Piłsudski, statesman of the Second Polish Republic from 1918 to 1935. Its aim was to weaken the Russian Empire and its successor states, including the Soviet Union, by supporting nationalist independence movements among the major non-Russian peoples that lived within the borders of Russia and the Soviet Union.”

“An alternative solution was put forward by Zbigniew Brzezinski when he suggested turning Russia into an assorted bouquet of territories, even advocating for the dismemberment of Siberia: ‘A loosely confederated Russia – composed of a European Russia, a Siberian Republic, and a Far Eastern Republic – would find it easier to cultivate closer economic relations with its neighbours.’”
Reader’s note: “cultivate closer economic relations with its neighbours” should be read as “surrender large parts of their economy to USA-based and european multinationals”.

What has our country accomplished that it should be exalted for ? It came away from WW2 with the arrogance as if we had won the war single-handedly. Russia suffered many times more dead than we did while keeping the German forces at bay so we could waltz in and claim the victory. General Eisenhower was appointed Supreme Commander of all Allied Forces in Europe when he had never even so much as commanded a platoon in combat during his military career. Even his fellow generals confessed that he was put in that position because he was the most political of the choices. When Francis Gary Powers was shot down over Russia in our U2 spy plane and was captured and became an embarrassment of Eisenhower’s term in office, his son David Eisenhower overheard his father say, “the CIA promised me that they would never get one of our U2 pilots alive, and then they go and give the son-of-a-bitch a parachute”. That’s the type of mettle our government and some of our military leaders were back then and they’ve only gotten worse since then. And who first started calling the the President of the United States of America “the most powerful man on earth”?
I fought the “cold war” against Russia from 65′ to 69′ in Naval Intelligence. At one time we had lost the location of one of our targets. Five of our main listening posts had been searching for it for weeks. While going in on mid-watch one night I asked God where to look that I hadn’t already. Immediately after that prayer a thought came into my head and I followed it, and found our long lost target. What was our military’s response to that ? They brought me in from the ‘cold’ and finagled a way to get me to Washington DC, and while I was there they put me through a drugged interrogation and wanted to know how in hell I found our target. I told them “God told me”, and the more they asked and the more I told them the truth the madder they got. I thought they might kill me, but if they did I wasn’t going to deny God during the process.
And which of the tens of millions of babies that have been murdered by our country and our courts should we whitewash and lift our heads proudly and declare ourselves the greatest representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ on planet earth ?
C’mon man ! or should I say men ? Babies are the most helpless human beings on earth, but they still have the defense of crying, the cries of one in the womb cannot be heard !
Put your ” big boy” pants on and DEMAND an end to all of this waltzing arrogance and perverted bullshit. Become the protectors of your families and communities that God created you to be.
The real reason the West and Global Elite hate Putin is because he passed a law in Russia making homosexual marriage illegal, and another one making it illegal to counsel and promote homosexuality among children, he stated a goal of reducing the number of abortions in Russia to 50% by the year 2025 !
These things are “sacred cows” to the “Globalists” that they believe they have acquired eternal victory in. And it messes with their sanity for a powerful leader like Putin to hold a mirror up to their faces and declare that these are sinful evils !
Right now President Putin and the people of Russia are much more God-Fearing than any of the phonies and frauds in our administration and country.
Guess who’s on the right side of God.
I pray for all Godly men and peoples and cheer them on and find inspiration in their standing up to the WEF, Klaus Schwab, Global Elite, West, election theft bullies. May God grant them wonderful victories !
BY MOST estimates, the US, mostly through bombing, killed between 6 million and 7 million Vietnamese during its Vietnam war. This article underestimates the death toll.
Thank you for refreshing my memory and real causes behind the war. However, there are stronger under currents that can’t be seen from the surface. Please read Shaykh Imran Hosein’s book titled, “Jerusalem in the Qur’an”.
It is the Zionists, Khazaarian, International Banksters behind all wars for the last 300 years, since the founding of private Bank of England in 1694.
The Zionists want to rule the world with their Meshiach as the head, The Anti-Christ. However, Muslims have the most detailed descriptions of how this game ends, since the Nation of Muslims would have to deal with the Anti-Christ and his evil followers.
When they trigger the WWIII the Almighty God, Allah, will decide who wins and who loses. There is a very in The Noble Koran in Chapter 3, Verse 55 that those who follow the Messiah (Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him, and his Blessed Mother, Mary)…meaning Orthodox Christians in Eastern Europe and Russia…will be given victory in this war and they will remain dominant.
Look at the advances that Orthodox Russia has made in it’s weapons systems since President Putin came to power in 1999. Even ICBM Sarmat (that can carry 15 MERVs) is hypersonic now, which was the last weapons system that was to be modernized by Sep/Oct 2022.
Ask Andrei Martyanov about Russian weapons systems.
The above-mentioned Shaykh Imran gave a private talk in UK in March 2020, that the God Almighty will destroy those Western nations that have done an abomination by making homosexual marriage legal will be destroyed this time. There is another verse in The Noble Koran in Chapter 17 (Israelites), that says all cities and towns will be destroyed before the Day of Judgement.
Shaykh Imran also said this war will take place when Biden is in office. I say most likely before Nov 2022 elections because there is no way they can steal the elections again, and Congress will lose its majority of democrat after the elections. So White House/Executive branch will be powerless starting January 2023.
There is a leaked video of CCP’s preparations to invade the US by November 2022. I am sure Democrat Party commies are in it. They need that help of their fellow comrades to cancel the elections in the US.
Mike Adams’ interview of JR Nyquist and Dr Ye-Ming is available on naturalnews.com.
God Almighty save the good, honest, hardworking, and truth seeking people on Earth, Amen!
You would have thought that the US/NATO would ease up after Russia destroyed their ‘proxy’ ISIS terrorists in Syria !
But NO – they decided to double down on their Idiocy !
NATO has been humiliated in Ukraine – all the rhetoric in the world won’t change that !
Remember Solzhenytsyn’s words ?
The perpetrators of those heinous crimes against Russia OWN the media !
Same case here !
When an exclusive coterie of private bankers have the exclusive right to create a nation’s money supply out of thin air as debt whenever they make a loan and charge the borrower compound interest, they are not going to give up this privilege without a fight, are they ?
“History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling money and its issuance.”
-James Madison
