While NATO may be benign (haha), the American’s and their neo con rulers certainly aren’t.. Their role(s) in the crisis in Ukraine and the rest of the world’s crisis are clearly evident.
When someone claims that NATO is a benign organisation,I stop listening!

Aldous Huxley nailed the problem with NATO and all other such organizations with the following words:

Institutions – ya can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em. When it was created, NATO served a useful purpose. It continued to do so until the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. After those events, it became an unnecessary organization and – what’s more – an extremely hazardous one. Its only purpose, the only purpose it could understand, was to prepare for war. But without any risk of war on the horizon, NATO itself became the greatest risk of war. Moreover, from the point of view of its myriad officials and employees, it provides job security and status. So, ironically, we find that NATO behaves rather like a living organism that will do anything to survive – even to the extent of flirting with thermonuclear war.
yes, all such organizations take on a life of it’s own, even if the original goal for creating them is no longer there. After all, if you include all the jobs on the line, direct and indirect, from the existence of NATO, I am sure it’s in the many millions (of people) and many Billions in $$$

Do you agree that it is either-or in terms of leadership choice and strategic options especially when with world wide web a Trotskyist orientation might make a lot of sense. After all the ex self proclaimed trotskyist traitors to the working class seem to have landed some pretty cushy adviser positions in academia, mainstream media and Washington think tanks.
By the way, Trotsky was in Mexico City when he was assassinated where he was more of a threat to the American ruling class than Russia as he was meeting with unionists and party members from the USA.

You didn’t ask me, but I say not either/or, nor should actions be modeled after people or ideology, although ideas and information can be gleaned from reading both. No point in fighting the last war, for one thing, and certainly not in limiting options and variety according to the histories.
What we know about both Stalin and Trotsky, and the rest of them, is what they did failed as far as providing long term solutions, so there was at least some things there which were flawed. The USSR had some good points but was far from ideal, and did not lead to sufficient flexibility, utilization of resources, or human satisfaction to stop it from falling apart.
Trotsky was a Rockefeller employee, but Rocky probably didn’t shed too many tears over him.
