Actually 70-85% of the Russia population is firmly behind Putin for they know if they loose in Ukraine there will be a Russia no more. Putin may need to change up strategy and go forth taking all of Ukraine and more.
As soon as you understand that the objective is to weaken Russia, which is a necessary condition to maintain the top thug status, everything makes sense. It is pointless to argue about human side of things and who started what when.
Syria was a wake up call for the US deep state. They realised then how powerful Russia had become.
What they have not yet processed is that the “at any cost” part of the equation is too big to be accepted even by the oligarch class.

That is just an intermediate one, I guess the main objective is to achieve regime change so that a new vassal “yeltsinized” regime can “invite” the USA to put a chain of DOD/CIA biolabs and bases on the north/west chinese borders to train and arm a lot of “freedom fighters” inside China-mainland. I reckon that Russia is the main target for the polish-lithuanian-ruthenian “prometheists”, but not for the USA.
The ruling elite view in the USA was that as B. Obama said “Russia is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbors, not out of strength but out of weakness” and it was useful to keep it, as a scarecrow to get more military-industrial spending (as G. Kannan wrote “Were the Soviet Union to sink tomorrow under the waters of the ocean, the American military-industrial establishment would have to go on, substantially unchanged, until some other adversary could be invented. Anything else would be an unacceptable shock to the American economy.”).
Things changed when the ruling elite decided that China-mainland could become a threat to USA unipolar dominance, then they decided that they wanted a vassal regime in Moscow. It is just “domino theory”, where regime change in Poland leads to regime change in Ukraine, and that leads to regime change in Russia, and that leads to weakening China.

The opponents are self-absorbed and immersed in reflexes of projection, and hence some do not yet realise that “at any costs” is the undesired but fall back position of The Russian Federation, and The Russian Federation and associates are not bluffing.
