Dear friends,
I have a found a few minutes to sit down and update you about donations.
So far, 80 people have made donations through PayPal. Even though many of you have had problems due to all sorts of bugs and quirks of PayPal, the money always ended up getting to me. I now also have as a policy to immediately transfer any money I get to my bank account, “just in case”.
Flattr has been most disappointing. So far I have received only two donations through this service, and not even enough to get a single dollar.
For those of you outside the USA, the address in Switzerland I indicated in my previous post and which is also shown in the right column of this page is still valid, but so far not a single donation has been sent there, except one from the USA which has not made it to Switzerland so far (I still hope that it will).
Now the good news. By “popular demand” as the expression goes, and thanks to the generous and kind help of “S”, I now have a PO BOX in the USA which you can use to send donations. Here is that address:
The Saker
PO Box 711
Edgewater, FL 32132-0711
If you do send me donations by snail mail (to Switzerland or the USA), please include your email address so I can confirm to you that I received it. Of course, if you prefer to donate anonymously, that is fine too (though in that case you could use some anonymous email address like q9r939t@gmail.com or something equally nonsensical).
I would like to add that your donations have already helped a lot. For example, I have recently been able to get repairs made on my car and that helps me a great deal on my other, day & full-time job.
One last thing, since this, after all, a personal announcement, I am looking for a not too expensive but good quality digital photo camera. If you have one you do not need and can donate, or a used one you want to sell, please email and let me know its specs and how much you want for it.
That’s it for now. An immense and heartfelt “thank you!!!” to all those who have helped out for their generosity and kind regards to all,
The Saker

When I try to send money via PayPal to vineyardsaker@gmail.com, it asks me for the country in which you reside. Shall I answer, “Switzerland”?

Nope, right now I live in the USA. Thanks a lot for your patience with PayPal and for any donation!
Kind regards,

I was under the impression that you can’t send banknotes by old fashioned postal services as they show up on scanners.
You suggest a $50 banknote in the post is ok.
Have I understood correctly?
Great work you do sir.
@APOL: As far as I can tell, sending cash is not illegal, but postal workers might help themselves to it. Here is what I found:

This site has some advice on how to best do it:

In the bad old days of the USSR, I used to send cash wrapped in a thin layer of tinfoil inside a greeting card like what you would get from Hallmark.
But, as far as I can tell, anybody with a credit card can send money through PayPal even if you do not have a PayPal account. Here is how:
https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Buying/Sending-money-without-registering-for-Paypal/td-p/464493
Since I do have a PayPal account all you have to do is this:
To send money without a PayPal account just go to PayPal’s front page and from there click the link Send Money> Send Money Online. From there it will be possible to send a payment to any email address.
You can thus send money to vineyardsaker@gmail.com without opening an account with PayPal.
This is the link to the page from where to do that:

Many thanks and kind regards,

Do we make a personal check out to, “The Saker”?
Do I make the personal check out to, “The Saker” or someone else?
@Anonymous:Do we make a personal check out to, “The Saker”?
I am not sure that I could cash such a check and since I cannot post my real name here, a check is probably not a good option. Sorry!

On the PayPal Page you refer to:
< Vous pouvez envoyer de l’argent à presque toute personne ayant une adresse de courriel ou un numéro de téléphone mobile, qu’elle possède ou non un compte PayPal. Pour pouvez dire au revoir à votre chéquier.>
I’m in Québec hence the French.
J’ai copié collé votre nom
(vineyardsaker@gmail.com) and they gave me: < Veuillez saisir une adresse de courriel ou un numéro de téléphone valide>
Do you have another US mail address?
No need to write a reply, you must be busy! Just another email address for me to try.Thanks.
@APOL:mon adresse de courriel est soit
vineyardsaker@gmail.com
soit
saker.analytics@gmail.com
les deux adresses devraient marcher et être interchangeables.
Un grand merci d’avance et meilleures salutations,
The Saker
Money orders (and personal checks) can be left blank for the recipient’s name. Somewhat of a risk if anyone intercepts the envelope, as it becomes a bearer-instrument that can be cashed by anyone. But- if we can’t make them out to “The Saker” then we’ll have to leave them blank. Chances are that it will arrive safely.
Saker- any possibility that you could add “The Saker” as an alternate name (like a d/b/a) with your bank? You might want to ask the bank about this, otherwise people might send checks and money orders to you that you can’t cash.
If I hadn’t just now read that you can’t cash anything made out to “The Saker”, I’d have done that, and what a mess that would be.
I know it’s all a real hassle, but please do look into this with your bank. My husband and I both have accounts that accept payments under our d/b/a names. It doesn’t cost extra. It should be easy for you to do, though I’m not sure whether your checks would have to be changed to add that. Can’t hurt to ask about it, and it sure would help your donations system a great deal if you could do this.
In the meantime, you should add a line to your donations information section on the front page to advise people to leave the recipient’s name blank on checks or money orders, and we’ll all take the risk.
@Sky:but please do look into this with your bank.
Ok, I will do that and let you know, but only probably by Tuesday. Sorry, my bank does not work on week-ends, its a small local credit union.
Thanks,
The Saker
Thinking about this further, you might explain to your bank that “The Saker” is a pen name more than a d/b/a. I’m not certain about this, but I think it might be easier for you to do it this way, without having to add the name to the face of your checks.
At worst, you might need to open a separate “Saker” account.
Don’t get discouraged- your bank probably has a way to do this (particularly if it’s a local bank rather than one of the big monsters).
@Sky: Don’t get discouraged- your bank probably has a way to do this
No, not at all, considering how kind and generous you all are, the least I can do on my end is to figure out a way to make things work. The hardest thing for me is to post here about this, I tend to be a little nervous and uncomfortable about money issues, but that is really the least I can do.
I should have an answer on that by Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.
Many thanks and kind regards,
The Saker
Will use snail mail, no point in donating through flatr
