Ukraine bought 75 Saxons from a British company, reportedly paying $50,000 per vehicle, a move that raised the eyebrows of military experts. British general Sir Richard Dannatt, who served as UK’s Chief of the General Staff between 2006 and 2009, called the vehicles “quite useless.” Others were less polite: Thomas Newdick in the popular blog “War is Boring” brought up memories of soldiers who rode in the APC, calling the vehicle an “armored bread van” and underscoring that the Saxon is extremely vulnerable in modern combat.
Nevertheless the first 20 Saxons arrived in Ukraine last month. And on Tuesday, an accident involving two of the APCs on the way from Kiev to the town of Berezan in the Kiev region resulted in the death of a Ukrainian soldier.
According to preliminary reports and eyewitness accounts, two APCs connected by a rigid tow hitch jackknifed, sending the leading vehicle to the left and the towed APC to the right, where it flipped and fell into a ditch. The driver of the leading APC, who reports say lost control of his vehicle, was killed. It is not known whether there was a driver or passengers in the towed APC.
There is a video of the wrecked Saxons and a close-up photo of a Saxon. The things obviously were originally the result of probably the same sort of money making scam as that the orc knuckledraggers and the dealer in the UK cooked up to resell them to the Ukraine regime. I wonder if they were unofficially known as “Thatcher Tanks” – that would have been a good name for them.

re: 3/10/15 segment.. So what is the point of mocking the poets of the “new” Kiev Ukraine? Maybe it is one of those in jokes that require more knowledge of the culture than I have. And the toothpaste like, squeezed out transition was a bit ugly and the music did not match the tone of the news segment at all. Why not have obama doing his “EU and USA are one ” clip and then put opposite the German Foreign Minister saying something contrary which shows that there are rapidly growing divisions in the EU nations over the US-Russia stand off over the Ukraine . Maybe one showing that no one wants to finance NATO from their budgets thus US tanks to Baltic States? This kind sequence shows the political point you want to make better and can still be true to your news reporting genre that you practice. A disjointed news flow is OK if….you are doing art or satire like what mats said but information communication still requires structure and flow–at least a bit of it.

That I believe falls in with what I posted in the past.Ukrainians in West (Carpathian) Ukraine have a lot of Vlach (Romanian) ancestry.Many Vlachs moved to the area in the Middle Ages,mountain shepherd villages in particular.At one time they had settled all the way into Moravia in the Czech Republic.Through the centuries with intermarriage and assimilation they became Slavic speaking and culturally Slav.While the Center and East bordered Tatar Crimea and the Tatar settled areas out from there.As well as having contact with the Northern Caucasus peoples.Again intermarriage and assimilation over centuries left traces of those ancestries in modern Ukrainians.
